My research topic is the effects of social media on a job search. I always end up in a discussion with my parents about how applying for jobs was so much different when they were younger. It's an interesting topic for me because so many of my friends are landing jobs through LinkedIn or Facebook and I actually got my job by stopping into the business, handing the owner my resume and shaking her hand. My approach to this topic will include researching the most common platforms where people are finding jobs and then analyzing how each vehicle is a positive or negative factor when it comes to a job search.

Blog about Twitter

I enjoy using twitter opposed to blackboard for class discussions. I don't typically use my personal twitter account, but after using my class account to hold a discussion, I think it would be a great tool for all classes to use. I think the technology behind blackboard is outdated. It's easy to jump right into a conversation by looking up the class hashtag. It's also convenient because the twitter phone app works great, whereas blackboard isn't exactly mobile friendly.

Blog: Advice

     New media would be a great addition to Baruch’s communication strategy. There’s several ways it could be introduced into the communication mix, but I believe a stronger presence on Twitter is the best way to go.      I would advise each academic department and student services department to have a Twitter account as well as a person who manages the account. Baruch has some presence on Twitter, although it isn’t used for effective communications with students.      Each academic department could engage with students by having personalized hashtags and creating conversations. Once the use of twitter takes off, I’d advise the departments to have professors use twitter for discussions specific to each class. Students are very comfortable with the platform and having conversations via twitter could be great for those who don’t get their ideas out in the classroom.
